Band of the Week: AWOLNATION
This week’s Band of the Week is AWOLNATION. The band will be performing at the Florida Theatre on March 13. The doors will open at 7 p.m., and the show is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. Bands Mother Mother and Pilly Wete will also perform. Tickets are $20 in advance and can be purchased online or locally at Hear Again Music and Movies. There is a $2 fee at the door for anyone under 21.
Frontman Aaron Bruno, also known as “AWOL”, is the architect behind the sound and stigma that is AWOLNATION. He’s supported on tour by band members Drew Stewart (guitar), Kenny Carkeet (keys), Devin Hoffman (bass) and Hayden Scott (drums).
It is difficult to confine the genius that is AWOLNATION to one specific genre. In a fashion, Bruno has created his own genre — blending rock, electronic, industrial pop, and dance sounds together. Unique arrangements combined with catchy and insightful lyrics are characteristic of Bruno’s creations.
AWOLNATION is not the type of music you’d hear on the radio. Rather AWOL gained his following through word-of-mouth and social media sights such as YouTube. His YouTube page has more than 30 thousand subscribers and more than 27 million views. The music video for “Sail” , arguably AWOLNATION’s most popular song, has more than 14 million views and the video for the band’s newest single, “Not Your Fault” , has more than 3 million views.
Since the release of the band’s debut album Megalithic Symphony in March 2011, the band has been steadily gaining recognition. “Sail” reached #10 on the U.S. Billboard Rock Songs, and it went platinum in the United States and double platinum in Canada. AWOLNATION’s music has also been featured on popular television shows such as The CW’s The Vampire Diaries, which featured “Guilty, Filthy Soul,” and Sons of Anarchy, which featured “Burn It Down.”
Don’t miss a chance to experience AWOLNATION’s first Gainesville performance; it will be a night to remember. AWOL’s charismatic sound is sure to capture your attention and leave you wanting more.
