Digital Calendar: April Game Releases

by Mike Profeta

Following last month’s releases, this month may seem a little light. Its approaching that time of year, however, where quality new releases are slim until the end of the summer months.

But that doesn’t mean we don’t have some good stuff coming this month to ensure those developing thumb callouses of yours.

First we have Defiance, a totally unique game experience from Trion Worlds that mixes third person shooter combat with the persistent world of an MMO. But there are no monthly subscriptions here: Defiance is buy to play — Guild Wars style!

And that’s just the beginning: It’s no coincidence that SyFy has a new show of the same name starting April 15th. Although the game and show take place in two different cities in the U.S., they are tied into one universe. As major events happen in the show or game, not only will they be referred to in the other medium, but they will create lasting changes as well.

Suit up, Arkhunter, Defiance invades your Xbox 360, PS3, and PC today.

Next, for those of you who are fans of the recent Mortal Kombat reboot as well as for fans of DC universe, Injustice: Gods Among Us releases on Xbox 360 and PS3 on April 16.

Injustice will feature an original storyline penned by NetherRealm and DC Comics writers that will justify the DC superhero roster fighting one another in what will surely create a new breed of fighting games.

Fans of the original Shin Megami Tensei Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers, which released back in 1999 for the PlayStation, can rejoice — A brand-new 3DS port is almost here.

The port features shorter load times, new battle animations and new demons to fight. On top of all of that, the game will feature full voice acting. Prepare to take Soul Hackers with you everywhere you go when it releases on April 16 for the Nintendo 3DS.

Speaking of re-releases, Capcom is set to re-release their critically acclaimed role-playing game, Dragon’s Dogma for Xbox 360 and PS3 on April 23,. Titled Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen, this re-release will include several improvements, based on player feedback, and entirely new content to the game.

A brand new area, new high-level skills, easier traveling throughout the world and major improvements to the game’s interface all come together to make this re-release a great buy for new and returning players alike. As an incentive for returning players, those who own and have played the original game will also get some exclusive goodies.

Go where no man has gone before when the newest Star Trek game releases this month. Simply titled Star Trek, this new adventure will follow Kirk and Spock, whose voices and likenesses were provided by Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto, along with the rest of the crew from the 2009 movie, as they take on a freshly re-imagined Gorn.

If you’re wondering what to expect from a gameplay perspective, Shelden Carter, the game’s creative director has gone so far as to state that “It’s like someone spliced Metroid Prime into my Uncharted.” If that’s not enough to excite you, I don’t know what is. You can revisit the final frontier when Star Trek lands on April 23 for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.

To round out this month, the follow-up to 2011’s Dead Island, Dead Island: Riptide, will release on

April 23. Taking place directly after the events of the original game, this spin-off will feature the survivors fighting to survive on a brand new island location.

The game will feature some improvements to its co-op system that will allow players to continue the character progression they started in the original game

and adds brand new enemies and gameplay elements such as dynamic weather. You can rest assured that this game is not just a clone of the original (like Left 4 Dead 2 was to the original Left 4 Dead) but is a whole new experience with improved and expanded gameplay.
