Wellness Wednesday: A Guide to Seasonal Eating

The fall season is upon us, which means plenty of reasons to cook! We’re just a few months away from New Year’s resolutions but it’s never too early to start making an effort to be healthy. Bringing the fall harvest into your kitchen is a great way to mix up your meals and add some seasonal healthy picks to the pantry. Local farmers markets are a great way to get a sense of what is in season. However, for those of us who never stray far from the grocery store, it’s sometimes hard to notice the new ingredients on the shelves. So what exactly is in season and why is it worth eating?

Pumpkin Seeds

It’s no secret that pumpkin pie is a fall staple, but throwing away the pumpkin seeds is practically a crime. Next time you slice up that pumpkin for a fall dish, hold onto your seeds and toast them for a tasty snack. The seeds are high in phytosterols which are known to help reduce bad cholesterol.

Swiss Chard

This leafy green is known for all of the benefits that come with munching down on it. The vegetable is packed with vitamins and antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory and blood sugar-stabling properties. This pick is often boiled or sautéed, but don’t forget to toss away the tough stem!

Winter Squash

Much like Swiss chard, winter squash has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits. This pick is great for the heart and high in fiber. Get adventurous with your sides and replace that potato with butternut squash roasted with a little brown sugar.

Brussels Sprouts

When it comes to getting a bad rap, this poor vegetable has taken a hit for the rest of the food group. But contrary to the belief that this veggie is every child’s worst enemy, they can be quite delicious. Roasted with a little olive oil, they make a great side for your fall meal. This cruciferous vegetable is also surprisingly high in vitamin C and fiber.

Apples

Apples seem to get bypassed as a fall food, but in fact, this is their season! Apples have been suggested to have anti-cancer, anti-asthma, blood sugar regulation and cardiovascular benefits. So take a bite out of one next time you hit the store or bake it into a festive pie.
