Fashion Friday: The New Neutrals

By Mallory Schindler

What’s black and white and red all over? You, because your wardrobe is void of color and you’re embarrassed – rightfully so. This is 2013 and we live in a free country, a country that no longer makes us put away white after Labor Day. That being said, there are so many fabulous colors out there that we just don’t wear enough – and they don’t have to take over your outfit. Color can, in fact, be neutral, despite what your mom told you. This fall, stop being a Drab Debbie and try these trendy, new neutrals:

YELLOW

I know what you’re going to say: “That’s too summery.” Well, it’s not. Yellow literally goes with everything. It is that perfect color that will go with any clothing item you own. And it doesn’t matter that it’s bright. It’s a neutral. Make sure it’s the right shade of yellow, though. It can’t be baby-nursery-nap-time yellow, or garish highlighter yellow. Go for a more harvest-style hue, a mustard or sunflower yellow.

OLIVE GREEN

This is a classic, but under-appreciated color. This shade of green is a great alternative for the usual navy or gray. Olive green looks great on every skin tone and is a great color for layering with prints. Take a hint from our military and hop on the olive-green bandwagon.

BLUSH

I’m obsessed with this color, and you should be as well. Blush is very in right now, in case you’ve been living under a rock. It’s elegant, feminine and flattering. It’s a great substitute for your usual white pieces. Even brides are requesting blush wedding dresses these days.

WINE

This is the color of the season. Hands down. If you look around, it’s all around you. Wine is taking over the fashion scene with no mercy, and it should be. Wine is another color that flatters every skin tone, hair color and mood. It’s sultry, deep and sophisticated. Wear it – anywhere, any way, any time.

CHEETAH

“But that’s not a color.” Yeah, I know. But prints can be neutrals as well, so don’t be so uptight. Cheetah/leopard print, when used sparingly, is chic and flattering. Because it is comprised of such low-key colors, it works. The key to wearing cat is to throw it into your outfit in subtle ways, like a belt or scarf.
