Fashion Friday: One Piece, Four Ways: Your Favorite Flannel Shirt

By Maureen Mariano

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I once thought flannel shirts were ugly (I blame Paul Bunyan).

But, boy, was I wrong!

More than a century after Hamilton Carhartt invented the first flannel shirt, many women have fallen in love with the patterned long-sleeve and anxiously await its comeback each year. Guilty.

I’ve even dubbed my flannel shirt — designed with unparalleled versatility and an instant grunge-chic look — my fall wardrobe’s most coveted item, because there are so many ways to wear it!

So if you haven’t done so already, cozy up to the plaid-printed button-up this season! From a night out at Half Cork’d Wine to a study sesh at Library West, check out four different outfits below that dress up and dress down the same flannel shirt.

Dress up your flannel shirt by tucking it into a black skater skirt and pairing it with ankle booties and a bold statement necklace. The black skirt and booties are perfect for fall and add instant glam appeal to the whole look.

Headed to the movies or a laid-back dinner? Pair the flannel shirt with boyfriend jeans, strappy sandals and a bold statement necklace to take the casual shirt to a whole new level. Don’t forget to top it off with a leather jacket to give your outfit more edge.

Florida’s unpredictable weather isn’t all that bad. Leave the house with a simple top and bottom, and then tie the flannel shirt around your waist. That way, in case it gets cold, you’ll have the shirt to layer on, but if the weather doesn’t change, you’ll still be on trend with the flannel-shirt wraparound.

You don’t have to say goodbye to the crop top just yet. By pairing the crop top with high-waisted jeans, black booties and an open flannel shirt with its sleeves rolled up, you’ll be rocking the crop top perfectly this autumn season.
