Music Monday: The ’90s Are Back

By Chelsea Perry

If you’re reading this blog, chances are you’re a product of the ’90s. And let’s be honest, I may be a little biased here, but the ’90s were just the greatest. Who can forget about about the brilliant ’90s toys (ahem, Furby or Tamagotchi, anyone?) or flawless ’90s television (“All That” [RIP old Amanda Bynes], “Rugrats,” “Boy Meets World,” “Doug”)? But, probably one of the greatest indicators of just how spectacular the ’90s were was the music. From *NSYNC to Destiny’s Child, the ’90s had it goin’ on.

Luckily for us, the ’90s weren’t that long ago, and many of our favorite artists from that time still make music and made a comeback this year.

Here is a list of five of our favorite artists from the ’90s and the new music they’re making this year.

1. Eminem – “The Marshall Mathers LP 2”

Eminem never really disappeared–his last album was released in 2010–but we’re still excited for his “comeback,” nonetheless. “The Marshall Mathers LP 2” is a continuation of the original “The Marshall Mathers LP,” which was released in 2000. If you enjoyed his last album “Recovery,” you’ll definitely enjoy this one. However, mixed in with the songs, unlike “Recovery,” are short skits–something the “old” Eminem did a lot.

2. Justin Timberlake – “The 20/20 Experience”

We waited seven long, torturous years for another album from this guy, and “The 20/20 Experience” doesn’t disappoint. Split into two separate albums (which can now be bought in one combined album), “The 20/20 Experience” is just what you’d expect from the Prince of Pop. If you’re a fan of Justin, you’ve probably already heard it (over and over again). But even if you’re not, definitely give it a chance. Even the most unsuspecting rock-lover can enjoy this one.

3. Pearl Jam – “Lightning Bolt”

Speaking of lovers of rock, incase you haven’t heard, Pearl Jam released a new album last month–the first one since 2009. “Lightning Bolt” has received solid reviews, with Rolling Stone giving it 3.5 out of 5 stars. If you’re overwhelmed with the pop releases this year, “Lightning Bolt” may just be your cup of tea.

4. Backstreet Boys – “In a World Like This”

Just like Eminem, the Backstreet Boys never really disappeared. However, Kevin disappeared for a while, therefore making them “Incomplete.” (Sorry, I had to…) Kevin is back though, people! The Backstreet Boys are now complete again, for the first time since their 2005 album “Never Gone.” *NSYNC was great; don’t get me wrong, I was obsessed as a child, but Backstreet Boys will always have my heart. If you missed Kevin, definitely give “In a World Like This” a listen.

5. Britney Spears – “Britney Jean”

“Britney Jean” won’t be released until December 3, but based on the two singles that have been released, “Work B**ch” and “Perfume,” it’s probably going to be pretty spectacular. If you don’t like Britney, that’s okay, but she did dominate the ’90s and she’s probably not going anywhere anytime soon.
