Simple Summer Cocktails

By Mary Kate Cobb

With summer approaching, the Florida heat can get the best of us. It’s the time of year to hangout by the beach, at the pool, the lake, in the river, or literally whatever body of water you can find. For those of us who can’t find any water to cool off in, we turn to ice cold beverages. Summer is the time for relaxation, especially as a college student. For all my 21 and older folks, summer is the time to cool off with alcohol. I’ve come up with a list of three easy cocktail recipes that you can make in five minutes or less. Each recipe can be made with 4 ingredients (or more if you’re feeling fancy) and will definitely cool you off on a hot summer day.

1. Gin and Tonic

This cocktail is perfect for hanging out on the porch of your house with some friends and just relaxing. This drink is so refreshing and it’s easy to make.

What you’ll need:

  • Gin
  • Tonic water
  • Lime

How to make it:

Put two shots of gin in a glass and then add five to six ice cubes with three ounces of tonic water. To top it off take the lime and squeeze it to add flavor to this summertime cocktail.

If you’re feeling fancy, you can add a simple syrup to the drink and skip the lime juice. After all this is complete, you’re good to start drinking and cooling off from a hot summer day.

2. Rum and Coke

This is probably the easiest cocktail recipe you will ever encounter in your life. It only requires two ingredients: rum and coke.

What you’ll need:

  • Rum
  • Coke

How to make it:

Take about two shots of rum and pour it into your glass, adding in four ice cubes and then pouring in half of a cold coke can. You can of course use more rum or coke depending on your taste. However, rum and coke creeps up on you fast, and you can get drunk without even noticing. So I will offer a warning: sip slow my friends.

3. Bloody Mary

This drink is perfect for a summertime brunch with friends during the week. Although Bloody Mary’s can be made several different ways, they are super easy to make. I’d like to offer you the easiest recipe ever.

What you’ll need:

  • Vodka
  • Bloody Mary mix
  • Lemon
  • Lime
  • Olive juice.

How to make it:

Start by pouring two shots of vodka into a glass and then add five ice cubes. After that pour the bloody Mary mix in until you think it’s a good amount. Next you’ll pour one teaspoon of olive juice in the glass. Finally add lemon and lime juice until it makes your taste buds smile. If you want to get more imaginative, you can add celery and olives to the drink or pretty much anything you want to add from your kitchen.
